To be eligible for a VAT refund on your shopping in France, you must:

  • have your permanent address outside France and the European Union ("EU");

  • be visiting France for less than six months; and

  • be departing France for a non EU country.

For more guidance, see below:

What countries are in EU?

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.

Residents of Monaco and French overseas territories

Residents of the Principality of Monaco; and the French overseas territories of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion are not eligible for a VAT refund on shopping in France.

Expatriates

If you are an EU passport holder who is resident of a non-EU country, you are eligible as long as you can provide a proof of your residency outside the EU (for French citizens, the consulate registration proof is required).

International students

Students and interns living in France or in the EU for six months or more per year are not eligible for a VAT refund on shopping in France.

Please note: Your eligibility may be checked by French customs/their designated agents at your departure airport. They have statutory powers to make the final decision on your VAT refund. Wevat cannot interfere with or overrule their final decision.
